About Us

Border Tails Rescue is a licensed no-kill animal rescue and welfare organization dedicated to the rescue and adoption of stray dogs across the world, with a unique focus on Mexico. Border Tails Rescue has a physical shelter facility with dogs on site for viewing everyday. Border Tails Rescue primarily works with rural shelters across the country, including but not limited to TX, AR, AL, LA, KY, IN, and MI on a regular basis as well as CACC, Chicago’s open intake shelter. BTR is Woman-founded by Harleigh Garcia, who was 20 years old at the time. The organization was founded in December of 2019 and Border Tails Rescue is registered with Illinois Secretary of State as a non profit organization. Border Tails Rescue operates entirely on donations and adoption fees.

Our Mission

At Border Tails Rescue, we believe that in order to truly support pets, we must also support people. That’s why we’re committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse community where everyone feels valued. We believe in transparency, reducing barriers to adoption, and providing compassionate support before, during, and after the adoption process.

Our mission is to eliminate the need for euthanasia of homeless dogs by providing shelter and finding loving homes for adoptable dogs. We do this through strong partnerships with animal service facilities locally, nationally, and internationally—including shelters in our area, other U.S. states, and underserved regions such as parts of Mexico.

Beyond rescue and adoption, we’re dedicated to addressing the root causes of animal overpopulation through education, community outreach, and our spay/neuter program. We do not discriminate based on breed, age, size, or ability, and we’re proud to take on many complex medical cases that others may turn away.

Our goal is not just to save lives—but to build a compassionate community where dogs and people alike can thrive together.
